Governor of Zakarpattia visits Support Centre for Ukrainian Refugees in Budapest
Viktor Mikita, Governor of Transcarpathia visited Budapest on 12 April at the invitation of László Lehel, President-Director of Hungarian Interchurch Aid. One of the main objectives of his visit was to learn about the coordination behind the relief programme in Ukraine, which has helped 500,000 people since the beginning of the war, as well as the workings of the relief programme in Hungary.
Visiting HIA’s Support Centre for Ukrainian Refugees in Budapest, he met refugees from near the front line and from the occupied territories, as well as the staff who help them. Mr Mikita also paid a special visit to HIA’s headquarters, meeting and greeting the staff involved in the coordination of the HIA’s response to the Ukraine crisis.
HIA leadership and the Governor have met regularly since the onset of war iin Ukraine with the goal of facilitating the organisation’s humanitarian programmes in the country. The first meeting took place in the first days after the outbreak of the war, the two leaders have last met a month ago in Uzhhorod.
During his visit Viktor Mikita thanked the staff of Hungarian Interchurch Aid for their work done over the past two years. The Governor underlined that HIA has provided the most aid to Transcarpathia. Their visit is an expression of gratitude as much as a wish to talk about the continuation of the support, as the situation on the ground is constantly changing alongside the needs of those affected by war. Laszlo Lehel praised the close, strategic cooperation that has been essential to enable the organisation to continue and develop its humanitarian assistance in the most difficult times and places across Ukraine. He said that thanks to unprecedented national and international cooperation, the aid programme has now helped more than half a million people, making it the largest humanitarian aid programme in Hungary’s history.
