Heating hearts & homes: briquettes for the marginalised in Zakarpattia
Zakarpattia, a mountainous region located in western Ukraine faced economic hardships even before the war, but with inflation on the rise, pensions have drastically lost value. The harsh winter months pose significant challenges for the elderly population, especially when it comes to staying warm. With the attacks on energy infrastructure, electricity is also not a given at any moment. As a response to this pressing issue, ACT Alliance member Hungarian Interchurch Aid provides briquettes for heating to IDPs and host communities in need – in total, 460 families have received 138 tons of heating material over the year.
For Klara, a 66-year resident of Fertesholmash this support means that she’ll be warm for the upcoming winter months. “It’s difficult to live alone. My back hurts, I cannot chop wood anymore either. But briquettes are really practical, easy to store and ration throughout the winter. Thank you for your support, it means the world for an old woman like me” – claims the widow.
These briquettes serve as a vital source of warmth for these people, who may otherwise struggle to maintain comfortable living conditions. The initiative not only addresses the immediate need for heating but also promotes a sense of community support and solidarity among the residents of Zakarpattia – they have not been forgotten. The provision of briquettes not only helps in alleviating the physical discomfort caused by the cold but also contributes to the overall well-being of the elderly population, ensuring they can live with dignity and health during the winter months.
