SITUATION REPORT – 08 APRIL 2022
- Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA) has had a permanent presence in Ukraine for more than 20 years. It is officially registered in Kiev and operates as a Ukraine-wide organisation. In addition to Zakarpattia, HIA has carried out significant humanitarian and development work in 10 counties of Ukraine directly assisting over 578,000 people.
- HIA started implementing an emergency program for IDPs in Ukraine within the ACT Alliance Appeal (Emergency Assistance to Refugees from Eastern Ukraine in Russia & Ukraine – UKR151) on January 01, 2015. The assistance has continued under the UKR152 appeal (Emergency Assistance to Refugees from Eastern Ukraine in Russia & Ukraine – UKR152), in 2016-2017, under the UKR161 Appeal and finally in the 2017-18 UKR171 Appeal. In the aftermath of the armed conflict that started in 2014, the HIA launched emergency assistance programmes, with direct assistance to more than 65,000 people in 543 municipalities. In February 2022 HIA started to support the war affected population in Ukraine and providing aid in different sectors to IDPs in Western Ukraine and refugees in Hungary through its offices in Lviv, Berehove and thorough partner organizations in 10 regions of Ukraine.
- HIA has a long-standing experience in Ukraine, build up a nationwide network with local partners, furthermore is well accepted in the Ukrainian civil society and among government authorities.
- The Hungarian Interchurch Aid has become one of the largest charitable organisations in Hungary. It operates 50 social and protection institutions with 314 employees in 24 municipalities, providing more than 100 different services and implemented aid programmes in more than 40 countries all over the world. In order to support people in need, the organisation operates 5 logistical bases in different parts of the country.
- HIA’s humanitarian response complements responses already being provided by private citizen groups and local authorities in Western Ukraine, who continue to play an important role in service delivery. Conflict and displacement dynamics remain highly fluid and assistance provided is adapted to move as conflict lines and displacement trends change.
